Our premium wines for November are from the Durbanville Hills Winery in South Africa. The red is a Shiraz and the white is a Sauvignon Blanc; both are $7.95 for a glass and $21.95 for a half litre.  

Our guest tap is currently pouring a special aged version of the Black Bridge Wee Heavy which has been safely stored in our beer cellar for one year. Next up we will pour their Smoked Porter. A couple of fine brews befitting the autumn season!

2016 Bushwakker Blackberry Mead King/Queen Bee Contest – Eat & Drink Like Royalty, 25th Anniversary Limited Edition Mead and Friends with Mead are Friends Indeed!
A true Saskatchewan phenomenon! Last year our entire Blackberry Mead offsale inventory of over 6000 bottles sold out in less than two hours. A new record was set when the devoted mead enthusiasts braved a Saskatchewan winter night and began forming a line 15 HOURS before it went on sale – yes, 7:00 PM on the Friday night! The line-up stretched half a city block by 9:00 AM. It was just like a tailgate party! Experienced mead lovers came prepared with ice fishing huts and propane heaters. Porta potties will once again be in place and we will be serving hot chocolate to all those waiting in line as well as conducting a mead trivia contest with prizes to be won. We have been brewing our Blackberry Mead all year long preparing for our annual kick off to the holiday season. 400 pounds of Lumsden Valley honey and 84 pounds of blackberries are in every batch. Limited edition 2016 commemorative Bushwakker “A Friend with Mead is a Friend Indeed” t-shirts designed by local artist, Gavin de Lint, will be available. Our Canadian Brewing Awards gold medal-winning Regina Pale Ale is now available for growler fills at the Quance Street SLGA store in Regina for the month of November. Three other new Saskatchewan brewed beers are also available. Be sure to support this SLGA pilot program and help grow Saskatchewan craft beer. If successful, more SLGA stores may also offer growler fills in the future!

Bushwakker Prime Rib Weekends Return. Back by popular demand! Our melt-in-your-mouth, low-and-slow roasted prime rib dinners with jumbo Yorkshire pudding have returned. And Sunday suppers just got a whole lot better at the Bushwakker! Choose from either an 8 oz. or a 10 oz. cut. Prime rib is definitely one of Bushwakker executive chef Mike’s specialties.

Last Call Sask Authors! Bushwakker Brewpub’s New Writers Corner Seeks Books! The Writers Corner will be launched on Saturday, November 12 at 3:00 PM. We are still seeking donations of recent publications (2014-2016 publication dates) from Saskatchewan authors (all genres) to help create a library within the Writers Corner. To be considered for the library, books must be a minimum of 40 pages and professionally bound. Please drop off a copy of your recently published book (along with purchasing information which can be shared with brewpub patrons) to Grant Frew  bar@bushwakker.com. Books will remain a part of the Bushwakker library. Rotating individual author biographies and a brief book synopsis will be featured in the brewpub’s weekly newsletter and social media channels on a regular basis.


One of our Writers Corner authors is Tara Gereaux

Tara’s first teen novella, Size of a Fist, was published in 2015 and was nominated for two 2016 Saskatchewan Book Awards. Her next novel, Saltus, is forthcoming from HarperCollins in Jan/Feb 2018. The manuscript for Saltus won the 2016 City of Regina Writing Award.

Tara received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. After graduation, she became a writer and story editor in film and television, and an episode she co-wrote for CBC’s Edgemont was nominated for a Leo Award. Her short stories and essays have been published in several Canadian literary magazines.

Tara also has an MA in Professional Communication from Royal Roads University, and her thesis, which explores her Métis heritage and identity, won the Public Ethnography Award from the Canada Research Chair in Innovative Learning and Public Ethnography.

From the Qu’Appelle Valley in Saskatchewan, Tara spent her childhood years in Fort Qu’Appelle, her teen years in Winnipeg, and much of her adult life in Vancouver, before returning to her home on the prairie. She currently lives in Regina with her dog, Jasper, and cat, Glitch.

Size of a Fist is a dark, gritty novella about growing up in difficult circumstances, where the suggestion of violence hovers beneath the surface of every relationship.

Living in a small, northern town has never suited Addy, so after a summer working as a janitor at the local hospital, she is more than ready to move to the city. On the night before her departure, her boyfriend Craig convinces her to make their final night in town one to remember and they head out with friends for one last party. During the celebrations, a game of chicken escalates and Jonas, the 14-year-old town outcast, is struck by the car Addy and her friends are driving. Guilt fuels Addy to postpone her moving plans until she's sure the boy is okay, causing a rift between her and Craig. 

The rift deepens as Addy develops an odd, almost obsessive, interest in Jonas, who's desperate for contact. The entangling relationships lead to a tragic event that forces Addy to re-evaluate everything she once wanted. 

A harsh tale of self-preservation and personal discovery, Size of a Fist is about guilt, violence and teenage sexuality.

Presented by the Saskatchewan Writers Guild, the Saskatchewan Poet Laureate Program and the Bushwakker Brewpub.  Join us for an intimate unveiling of a new space dedicated to celebrating the recent works of Saskatchewan published authors. What will begin as one shelf will hopefully grow into a large library showcasing our province's word smiths. Pub patrons are encouraged to peruse a copy whilst enjoying a pint. Enjoy select readings from some of Bushwakker's patron writers. Event Emcees will be Gerry Hill - Saskatchewan Poet Laurete and Tracy Hamon - Saskatchewan Writers Guild. Nov. 17: HEALTH SCIENCE PUB. Our wildly popular Science Pub Series returns for a fifth incredible season! Enjoy lectures on scientific topics of general interest in our Arizona Room (main floor banquet room) over beer and snacks. The room opens at 5:00 PM and quite often is full by 6:00 PM. Avoid disappointment and come down early for dinner and a pint before the presentation which begins at 7:00 PM. This month's lecture is titled, Man vs. Woodpecker: What happens to the brain during a concussion? Presented by Patrick Neary, Professor, Kinesiology & Health Studies, University of Regina.
Regardless of the mountains of information that we collected on concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury, the diagnosis of concussion is still a clinical diagnosis; i.e., a medical doctor must make the decision. Unfortunately, this medical decision is not accompanied by objective scientific evidence. Thus, an objective biomarker of concussion is one goal of our research laboratory by investigating the biology of the brain before, during and after a concussion. We use non-invasive equipment to measure brain blood flow, oxygen levels and blood pressure to try to guide athletes back to school and return-to-play.


6 Things Businesses Can Learn from Craft Beer

Craft beer is pretty great.

Besides the obvious points that, well, it is beer and beer is great in general, there’s a lot more that pours into it. Craft beer stands for uniqueness, originality, quality, persistence, hard work, passion and spontaneity. 

Unlike its Big Beer competition,  craft breweries know few  boundaries and put experimentation and fun at the forefront of everything they do. It’s an industry overflowing with originality and, better yet, camaraderie. There’s a lot we can learn from craft brewers, both in business and on a personal level. 

1. Know thyself
Almost straight out of Sun Tzu’s Art of War, the most important thing in business is to really know what you’re all about. What drives you? What motivates you? What keeps you up at night? Craft breweries must establish their inner “why” out of the gate. Personality and reputation reign supreme.
Business Lesson: Without establishing an original brand voice, you’re doomed to get lost in the shuffle.

2. Know thy enemy
Sorry, still riffing on Sun Tzu. But knowing your competition inside out is imperative to success. For example, did you know that 89.5 percent of the market is controlled by The Big Three, according to 2014 statistics? Craft brewers are acutely aware of this when they enter the market.
When the Davids are faced with these Goliaths, it’s second nature to flee. But instead, craft breweries have learned to collaborate and stick together in the face of uncertainty.
Business Lesson: It’s important to be aware of what you’re getting yourself into and know that many have gone before you and found success.

3. Know more
Just like craft brewers must do their homework to learn trademark law and potential legal ramifications when naming a new beer, so must you in whatever endeavor you plan to undertake.
Business Lesson: Knowledge is power and will come to your rescue in almost any situation you find yourself in.

4. Know the future
Sure, no one can really know the future. But you can do everything in your power to stay ahead of the curve. Like any conscientious business owner, craft brewers must be vigilant about foreseeing potential issues and getting ahead of them.
Business Lesson: Problems are easier solved when you see them coming.

5. Know when to fight and when to befriend
Legal battles will happen. They can, however, be avoided by simply picking up the phone and sorting the problem out with an actual conversation. Craft brewers don’t always have big budgets and many resort to settling differences over a beer.  
Business Lesson: It’s a small world we live in, and you don’t want the reputation of being combative, petty and stubborn. Reputation reigns supreme, remember?

6. Know thy neighbor
Collaboration is how many craft breweries survive. Silos don’t tend to function as well, especially when a crisis hits. Learn to be friendly —genuinely friendly.
Business Lesson: You’ll be amazed at the progress you or your business can make with others on board versus a solo venture.
Craft beer is remarkable for more than just its tasty product. Its industry teaches many key lessons in how to succeed in business and in life. We’ll keep on learning them, one sip at a time.
