Our guest tap is currently pouring an unfiltered and hoppy American style wheat beer called Wheat Burst from Black Bridge Brewery in Swift Current. Next up is a limited release offering from the Prairie Sun Brewery in Saskatoon. Their Saison du Miel et Vin is a local wild flower honey-infused Saison refermented with champagne yeast and aged in a wine barrel.

Last call for Bushwakker beer at The MacKenzie Art Gallery! We’ve had a great summer working with the good folks at Regina’s MacKenzie Art Gallery but this particular party will be coming to an end with a show on Thursday and Friday. The Candahar is one of their most interactive installations to date. Created by Winnipeg-based artist, Theo Sims, this replica of a Belfast pub complete with Bushwakker beer on tap will whisk you away from the queen city to 1990's Ireland. This month's lecture will be presented by Jim Farney, Associate Professor in Politics and International Studies at The University of Regina. This should be a well-attended lecture! How are we to understand the rise of Donald Trump? And could we have predicted it? This talk will answer these questions by presenting some of the frameworks political scientists have developed to understand American electoral politics, put Trump's candidacy in the context of those theories, and ask what Trump's campaign means for our ability to predict and explain politics.

Why You Can't Order a Guinness at These Hotel Bars

When Brian Martens traveled to Los Angeles for vacation a few years ago, he and his brother met up in the hotel bar to plan out their trip. As Martens tells it, he took one look at the draught beer line-up and told his brother, “We’ve got to get out of here. This is a waste of our time.” 

Now that Martens serves as the assistant general manager of The Boxer Boston Hotel, he tries to ensure none of his guests leave his bar in search of better beer. So he stocks all four of his beer taps with a rotating selection of local beer and fills his in-room mini bars with Castle Island Brewing beers from South Boston. He’s got a few bottles of Budweiser products lingering behind the bar but they’re left over from his last order more than six months ago. Once they’re gone, he doesn’t plan to buy any more.

“It’s not moving,” he says of the Bud. “People aren’t really asking for those domestic mass lagers.”

Beer-centric hotels have gotten a lot of ink over the past few years, as places like Hotel Indigo East End (Long Island) program beer packages that include brewery tours, Hotel Vermont makes history by adding a beer concierge to its staff, and breweries themselves announce ever more elaborate on-site hotels, like San Diego’s Stone Brewing did earlier this month.

But there’s a quieter movement at work in the hotel industry and that is the wholesale replacement of mass-produced brews with craft offerings and those available exclusively in-market.

 So far, dozens of independent hotels (mostly, though not entirely, in the United States) have transitioned to craft -only and at least two U.S.-based chains are heading in that direction. The two corporations – Four Points by Sheraton and Cambria Hotels & Suites by Choice Hotels – say emphasis on local beers has become a hallmark of their brand strategy.

“Local craft beers are the star at our properties,” says Janis Cannon, Choice Hotels’ senior vice president of upscale brands.

In an attempt to appeal to millennial travelers who indicate a preference for experience over familiarity, most of Cambria’s 25 properties (and 17 under construction) sell in-state beer exclusively, both on tap and in the bottle. Corporate managers work with a firm to source local beer and food but individual owners have a lot of leeway. To wit: the owner of Cambria’s Akron, Ohio, property only buys from Akron breweries. Why? He also works as a cattle rancher who feeds his livestock the spent grains he picks up from his brewery partners. He then completes the cycle – and tells a heartwarming, on-trend story — by serving his own beef at his hotel.

Additionally, Cambria’s managers benefit from turning the process into somewhat of a game. At each of the last three hotels they’ve opened, they’ve invited local food and beverage personalities to judge an array of local beers. The winner earned a place on the hotel’s rotating tap system for at least a few months. But the real winner may be the hotel itself.

“Talk about the unexpected,” says Scott Carman, director of public relations for Choice Hotels. “Instead of having a hotel grand opening with speeches and a ribbon cutting, we had in local breweries, potential customers and the local media. It’s made for a great celebration.”

Cambria, a brand that markets itself on “authenticity, community and sustainability,” launched its beer program around two years ago. But the chain that really made early headway is Four Points, which started its Best Brews program more than a decade ago at its Los Angeles airport location and has gotten lots of attention from the travel press for stocking more 
than 100 beers at its LAX hotel’s pub, Brewers Beererie, and devoting all six of its poolside taps to regional selections.

Though the Best Brews program doesn’t guarantee that every tap will be taken up with a local option, it does promise at least one or two locals at each of the company’s 200 international pubs, along with beer holidays that gift bottle openers and other prizes and artist-designed coasters exclusive to each property to be redeemed for beer or coffee. The program is enhanced by a website that’s full of beer facts and trivia. Part of the impetus for Best Brews came from the fact that business travelers, especially those at airport hotels, too often don’t get to interact with the places they “visit.”

“So many times as a traveler you fly in and out of cities and you see airports, taxi cabs and conference rooms. You don’t have a chance to experience a destination,” says Paige Francis, Sheraton’s Vice President of Global Brand Development for Specialty Select Brands.

That may have been acceptable for an earlier generation of business traveler. But not this one.

“For the Four Points traveler, the bar is really key to the guest experience,” says Francis, who notes that today’s business traveler typically wants to use short periods of downtime to work or socialize outside the room instead of taking a nap or watching a movie. To accommodate this type of guest, each Four Points pub brings a sample of the outside in by filling the space with homegrown live music, televised sports that feature the city’s teams and food produced nearby. A weekly Best Brews and (local) BBQ party adds to the ambiance. 

Some hotel managers swear the first question their bartenders consistently hear is, “What do you have that’s local?” So they can help assure success by ensuring buy-in from their customer-facing staff. Though Four Points and Cambria leave a lot of the beer programming to their managers on-the-ground who presumably ask their bartenders what beers excite them, shifting an entire beer program can be much more easily accomplished at a boutique hotel, where guests tend to seek out individuality over homogeneity and innovation doesn’t have to seek approval up the chain of command.

“Boutique hotel owners are … very open to new ideas, even from their own staff, because they value originality,” emails Frances Kiradjian, CEO and founder of the Boutique & Lifestyle Lodging Association. 

“Boutique hotels always value community and thus are looking for ways to support and integrate local artisans into their hotels, whether it is food, beverage, entertainment, fashion or art.”

But don’t expect all indie hotels or boutique-style corporate brands to migrate toward a menu of all craft beer all the time. Some feel their target audience just isn’t looking for that.

Take JW Marriott, for example. Even though its Houston location has an all-local tap lineup and more than half a dozen of its domestic hotels and resorts offer some local craft beers, brewery-visitation packages and on-site tastings from brewery sales reps, the high-end chain positions itself as a destination for healthy cocktails, not beer.

Some properties admit to making missteps as they figure out their beer programming. Boston’s The Boxer, part of the Philadelphia-based Independent Collection that fiercely promotes the local orientation of its properties, kept macro domestics around for what Martens admits was far too long. Located across the street from the TD Garden pro hockey and basketball stadium, he and his colleagues assumed fans would stop in for good old-fashioned domestic macro beers before and after games. But if Bruins and Celtic fans are coming in, they’re not ordering standard light lagers, and neither are the foreign tourists who stay overnight.

“We got into that trap of trying to cater to that,” says Martens. “(But) European travelers aren’t trying the mass-produced American lagers, just as German travelers weren’t interested in the German lager we had. They took it for granted they weren’t going to like some of the local craft brews but they wanted to try every one, knowing that what’s in the glass is part of the experience.”
