BUSHWAKKER EVENTS

June 17: REGINA GLOBE THEATRE 50TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE BEER LAUNCH.  5:30 PM. Although Bushwakker is celebrating a quarter century of service this year we certainly tip our hat to the Globe Theatre who also faced difficult challenges in the early years but has grown into a provincial treasure. After extensive interviews and research into the half century old theatre the Berry Dramatic wheat beer will be released in fine fashion with artistic director, Ruth Smilie, tapping a ceremonial firkin to officially launch the commemorative brew's release. Made with three standout ingredients, local Saskatoon berries, wheat & barley, these key ingredients symbolize the three artistic director teams the Globe Theatre has employed. No small feat! Only 250 bottles of the Berry Dramatic Ale were produced. Be sure to get your keepsake bottle celebrating a true Saskatchewan cultural treasure!

June 20: Monday Night Jazz & Blues. 'ROUND MIDNIGHT. Popular act plays great jazz and adult contemporary tunes. 8:00 PM.

June 22: Wednesday Night Folk. TOODLE-OO THERESA. A final Bushwakker performance from longtime Bushwakker server, Theresa Burkhart, who will be joined by Carol Donaldson. Come enjoy this talented folk duo one last time and wish Theresa a fond farewell! 9:00 PM.

June 23: SCIENCE PUB - Navigating Science and Evidence in Contentious Policy Debate. Presented by the University of Regina Faculty of Science and The Bushwakker Brewpub. Our wildly popular monthly Science Pub Series has returned and promises to be even better than before. The programming will start off slowly but will develop so that a larger segment of the university will be involved to make the revitalized Science Pub even bigger and better! Enjoy lectures on scientific topics of general interest in our Arizona Room (main floor banquet room) over beer and snacks. The room opens at 5:00 PM and quite often is full by 6:00 PM. Avoid disappointment and come down early for dinner and a pint before the presentation which begins at 7:00 PM. Science Pub will break for the summer and return in September. This month's lecture is entitled: Navigating Science and Evidence in Contentious Policy Debate. Presented by Dr. Loleen Berdahl from the College of Arts & Science at The University of Saskatchewan and Dr. Maureen Bourassa from the Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan. While there is considerable interest in the idea of evidence-based policy, the inclusion of science and evidence in policy debate is not always smooth, particularly when the policy issue under consideration is contentious and/or involves risk. In this lecture, University of Saskatchewan researchers Dr. Loleen Berdahl (Political Studies) and Dr. Maureen Bourassa (Marketing) consider how the myriad actors within policy debate may differ with respect to what evidence is viewed as appropriate for policy decision-making, and discuss key factors that should be considered when communicating information to diverse audiences. They also examine the roles of emotion and cognition in risk perceptions, and raise what it means to foster respect in policy debate.

June 27: Monday Night Jazz & Blues. HOODOO. Young new blues act lead by guitarist, Ethan Reoch. 8:00 PM.

June 29: Wednesday Night Folk. RON LOOS. Pop covers from this talented guitar plucker. 9:00 PM.

June 30: RIDERS VS. ARGONAUTS. Be sure to stop by the Bushwakker and join the Sea of Green before, during or after this Thursday night season opening home game and enjoy our Argonaut Burger & a Pint special for only $17.95. Think of it as “devouring” the competition. Kick-off is at 8:00 PM. Best of luck in 2016 Riders!!!

Bushwakker, Talent Source

The Bushwakker holds a reputation in the restaurant business for good employee retention. In fact students from the U. of R. business school have studied us in the past to find out how we do it. That reputation has been harder to maintain of late. New restaurants with themes similar to ours have opened in recent years, some of them brewpubs, some not, and our employees are valuable to those new entries to the market because they can help set the right stage.

Furthermore, many restaurant kitchens in Regina have been headed by “graduates” of the Bushwakker kitchen. Many of our brewers have also found interesting employment elsewhere. Our first brewer, Scott Robertson, is the head brewer for both a brewpub and a microbrewery in Singapore. Dave Rudge has made a success out of his Half-Pints microbrewery in Winnipeg.

Now our current head brewer, Mitch Dalrymple, will be heading to Alberta in a few weeks to be head brewer at a new microbrewery in Medicine Hat. We wish Mitch well in following the tradition of other former Bushwakker brewers. Theresa Burkhart, a Bushwakker server for a quarter-century, will accompany Mitch to Alberta. Supervisor Jen Muscoby also has left to be the Taproom Manager down the street at Rebellion Brewing.

Mitch joined the Bushwakker in the previous millennium, in 1999. He worked as a cellarman (brewer’s assistant) until 2003. He returned as head brewer in 2005. He has been our head brewer ever since and has continued the growth of the Bushwakker’s reputation as a top Canadian component of the craft beer industry. That’s the longest serving time of all Bushwakker head brewers.

I remember the decision to hire Mitch as a head brewer. There were other candidates, some of whom have now gone on to establish their own microbreweries in Saskatchewan. To some people advising me on that decision, Mitch came across as being just too “low-keyed”. However, I concluded that that was just his laconic personality and that he had all the smarts for the job. He has proven me right.

His position will be filled by his current assistant, Michael Gaetz, our grandson. It’s a big jump from assistant to head brewer. Michael will now be responsible for planning the brewing schedule to make certain that regular beers are always available, to monitoring the brewery supplies inventory, maintaining relations with suppliers, liaising with the executive of the Ale and Lager Enthusiasts of Saskatchewan, etc., in addition to brewing and maintaining beer quality. Mitch’s son Brad will move into Michael’s old position.

But as we had our faith in Mitch’s abilities we now have that same faith in Michael’s.

TIME OUT

MacGregor was having an affair with his secretary. One day they went to her place and made love all afternoon. Exhausted, they fell asleep and woke up at 8pm. MacGregor hurriedly dressed and told his lover to take his shoes outside and rub them in the grass and dirt. He then put on his shoes and drove home. "Where have you been?" his wife demanded. "I can't lie to you" he replied "I'm having an affair with my secretary. We had sex all afternoon". She looked down at his shoes and said "You lying bastard! You've been playing golf!
